It’s not the tech itself that’s bad, but rather how we engage with it. Comparing our lives to curated online highlight reels, getting caught up in endless news cycles, or just feeling perpetually “on call” can be genuinely draining. It makes me think about how we can shift from being reactive to proactive in our digital lives, ensuring our everyday tech serves us, not the other way around.

For apps that I really need to hear from, I chose banners or sounds only, not both. It’s amazing how much quieter my phone is, and I feel so much more in control.   • Designated Tech-Free Zones: My bedroom, especially an hour before bed, is now a tech-free zone. No phone, no tablet, just books or quiet reflection. It’s helped me sleep better and feel more present in the evenings. You could try this for mealtimes too – it makes a huge difference in conversation quality!
  • Intentional Engagement: Instead of just picking up my phone out of habit, I try to ask myself, “Why am I picking this up right now? What do I want to achieve?” If it’s to check the weather, I do that and put it down. If it’s to connect with a friend, I focus on that conversation. This makes my everyday tech use much more purposeful.
  • Curate Your Feed: Our online spaces should feel good, right? I’ve been unfollowing accounts that make me feel bad, or that don’t add value to my life. Instead, I follow accounts that inspire me, teach me something new, or make me laugh. It’s about shaping your digital environment for better smart living.

It’s all about making conscious choices. For example, I love using my smart speaker to play music while I’m cooking, or to quickly set timers, but I’ve also learned to not let it become a constant background noise that distracts me.
